Your Guide to Getting a Commercial Driver’s License

HDS Truck Driving School will give you the tools needed to obtain your CDL. Truck drivers are the backbone of our society. They keep businesses and companies afloat and working like a well-oiled machine. The federal government requires that each state establishes and abides by standards for licensed commercial truck drivers.

Before you receive your CDL you must pass 2 tests:

This covers information on how to operate the vehicle as well as the many obstacles truck drivers encounter while on the road.

a) Additional tests are available for applicants who wish to gain further knowledge of the many different types of commercial motor vehicles. Exams include:
  1. Passenger Transport Test: This is a requirement for all bus drivers.
  2. Air Brakes Test: This is a requirement for drivers who want to drive a vehicle equipped with air brakes.
  3. Tanker Test: This is a requirement if you decide to drive commercial vehicles carrying liquids.

This will prepare applicants with real on-road experience to demonstrate their abilities and capabilities. The skills test is broken into 3 sections:

  1. Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection: This tests a driver’s knowledge on whether or not a commercial vehicle is safe to drive. Applicants walk around the vehicle, checking tires, gauges, lights, and the overall condition of the vehicle.
  2. Basic Vehicle Control: This tests a driver’s knowledge and basic skill and control of commercial vehicles.
  3. On-Road Application: This tests a driver’s skill and control with on-road situations.


Applicants must also meet physical requirement qualifications. To be eligible to obtain a commercial driver’s license through a truck driving school, each person must come prepared with:
  1. Social Security Card
  2. Proof of Identity & Age
  3. Proof of Residency
  4. Proof of Insurance
There are other general qualifications each person must meet in order to be admitted to a truck driving school:
  1. Applicant must be 21 years of age or older to apply.
  2. Must be able to communicate fluently with the public.
  3. Must be able to read and understand highway traffic signs.
  4. Must be able to fill out reports and know how to respond to law enforcement.
  5. Applicant must also have completed a driver’s road test and issued a certificate as proof of completion.

Once all required steps are finished, applicants who have successfully completed their CDL training as required in truck driving school will be able to contribute to the face-paced growth of our highways systems and be a part of helping our country move forward.
